Finding Health Statistics: Selected Resources

The purpose of this resource guide is to assist researchers locate health statistics. The Internet resources listed are freely available online.

United States National Statistics

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • National Center for Health Statistics The country's principal health statistics agency, the site provides access to the wide range of information and data available from NCHS.
  • CDC Wonder A database that provides access to a wide variety of CDC data.
  • FastStats A to Z The FastStats site provides quick access to statistics on topics of public health importance and is organized alphabetically. Links are provided to publications that include the statistics presented, to sources of more data, and to related web pages.
  • Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Contains data on specific diseases as reported by state and territorial health departments and reports on infectious and chronic diseases, environmental hazards, natural or human-generated disasters, occupational diseases and injuries, and intentional and unintentional injuries.
  • National Vital Statistics System Birth and mortality data.

National Institutes of Health

Agency for Health Care Quality and Research

  • Data, Statistics, & Tools Longitudinal hospital care data, state snapshots, and survey information about the health care status of Americans and their medical expenditures. Includes HCUPnet (Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project) which provides access to health statistics and information on hospital stays at the national, regional, and state level.
