Abstract: This collection contains materials related to campus unrest at the University at Buffalo, 1966-1970. Included are materials regarding the "Faculty 45," and artifacts such as buttons, strike flags, banners, a tear gas canister, and a recording of the "Hayes Hall Blues," a song about the "Faculty 45."

Acquisition Information

The majority of the materials in the collection were collected by the University Archives during the 1960s and 1970s. Exceptions include the Rumor Control Center files (see box 4) and items on the Spectrum controversy.

Additional material was later added to the collection:

The notebook (see box 5) was given to the Archives by Neil Gallagher of the Philosophy department. It was found in a University car by Charles Tampio, an English graduate student.

"Anatomy of a Disruption" (see box 2) was added to collection on July 7, 1970.

Additional materials regarding the "Faculty 45" (see box 3) were donated by Emily Goodman, wife of Nicholas Goodman, on July 7, 1974.

Printed materials concerning selective service issue added May 1966. Additional selective service material including notes on meeting kept by Ann London was added in February 1982.

A copy of "Guerilla Street Theater," was added April 1986.

Scope and Content Note

Leaflets, newspaper clippings, reports, artifacts and other items collected by the University Archives as documentation of campus unrest at the State University of New York at Buffalo, 1966-1970. Topics include censorship of the student newspaper the Spectrum, the Themis Research Contract, disruptions on campus in Spring 1969 and 1970, the arrest and trial of the "Faculty 45" in 1970, and other actions primarily concerned with the reactions of students and faculty to the war in Vietnam. Also included are files of the Rumor Control Center, 1969-1970. Artifacts include buttons, strike flags, banners, a tear gas canister, and a recording of the "Hayes Hall Blues," a song about the "Faculty 45." This collection also includes later news articles and recollections of participants about campus unrest at the University at Buffalo in the 1960s.


Arrangement

The collection is divided into five series: I. Campus Unrest, 1965-1970, II. Faculty 45, III. Spring 1970, IV. Rumor Control Center Files, V. Publications and Clippings. The contents of the series are in chronological order, with additional materials added at the end of some series.
