Collection includes historical documents concerning the inception and early history of the University which Park used as research for his publication, History of the University of Buffalo (1917). Also includes an unpublished manuscript for a subsequent history of the University; typewritten memoir; scrapbooks regarding his father, Roswell Park and the University of Buffalo (1907-1964).

1888 (Nov. 6) Julian Park born in Buffalo, New York, son of Dr. Roswell Park, the namesake for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, an internationally known cancer research facility in downtown Buffalo.
1910 Received his B.A. from Williams College.
1910-1911 Studied at the University of Paris and Columbia University.
1911-1913 Private Secretary to Cornelia Bentley Sage Quinton, Director of the Albright Art Gallery.
1913 Instructor in French, University of Buffalo.
1914-1918 Secretary for the College of Arts and Sciences.
1916 Married Florence Parkes. They would have three children: Roswell, David Julian, and Martha.
1917-1920 Served as French Consul for Western New York.
1918 Named Acting Dean to the newly formed College of Arts and Sciences.
1919-1954 Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
1920 Helped found the Scriptores club writers circle with Dr. Augustus H. Shearer, Librarian of Grosvenor Library, and Marc A. Rose, managing editor the Buffalo Evening News.
1923-1926 Served on Council of the American Association of University Professors.
1923-1927 President of the Buffalo Association of the Sons of the Revolution.
1924 Instrumental in starting Buffalo branch of the Foreign Policy Association.
1925-1929 Lecturer, Geneva School of International Studies.
1926-1935 Member of the Committee on Scholarships, Association of American Colleges.
1932-1942 President of the American Civil Liberties Union, Buffalo Branch.
1933 Appointed Chevalier (knight) of the Legion of Honor.
1935-1938 Chairman, Commission on Teacher Training, New York State Association of Colleges.
1941 Director of the newly-formed Pan American League Against Cancer.
1942 Ran as a candidate for a seat in the United States Congress on the Democratic Ticket. Park said of his decision to run: "It had always seemed to me that we who teach and preach politics ought to get a practical taste of it..."
1941-1942 (March-November) Trustee, Grosvenor Library (forerunner to the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library). He resigned the post to take over the Directorship of the Library while the current Director was on military leave.
1943-1945 Acting Director of Grosvenor Library, during wartime emergency.
1946-1948 Trustee, Grosvenor Library.
1949 Promoted to "Officier of the Legion of Honor" by the President of France for his contributions to strengthen the bonds of friendship between France and the United States.
1954 (July) Retired from the Deanship of the College of Arts and Sciences and appointed Dean Emeritus and University Historian.
1955-1959 President, Buffalo Historical Society.
1963 Presented the prestigious Red Jacket Award from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.
1965 (July 17) Died, Buffalo, NY.

Scope and Content Note

Papers concerning the history of the University of Buffalo assembled by Julian Park, first Dean of the Colleges and later University Historian. Includes documents from the University Council and of the Medical School concerning the activities of the University from its establishment in 1846 to the 1950s; correspondence and documents concerning the University Extension Movement, circa 1904-1911, and the College of Arts and Sciences, 1913-1961; minutes of the Deans' Committee, 1916-1923; correspondence with John Lord O'Brian and Edward Michael concerning the Extension Movement and the acquisition of the Main Street campus for the University; correspondence with Paul Mohn, Niles Carpenter and others concerning the history of the University, the Schools of Engineering, Social Work and Medicine; scrapbooks, 1911-1964, kept by Park documenting the University of Buffalo as well as Park's personal and professional activities.

The University Archives has the original minute books of the University Council for 1855-1920, but the minute book covering 1846-1854 has not been located. The rough drafts of the 1851-1853 minutes in the Papers of Julian Park are the only available record of the Council meetings during that time period. The 1851-1853 drafts have been microfilmed.

Included are detailed accounts of the School of Engineering by Dean Paul Mohn and of the School of Social Work by Dean Niles Carpenter, and several letters from John Lord O'Brian concerning the University Extension Movement, the acquisition of the Main Street Campus and the hiring of Samuel P. Capen. Several letters refer to the memoirs of Norton and Capen written by Park and published in the University of Buffalo Studies in 1924 and 1957.
