Scope and Content Note

The G. Lester Anderson papers span the period 1951 to 1976, when Anderson was an administrator and faculty member at the University of Buffalo (1951-1968) and Pennsylvania State University (1969-1976). The papers include correspondence, handwritten and typescript drafts of papers and speeches, reprints, reports, bibliographies, newspaper clippings, photographs, news releases and materials for courses. His work centered on the organization and administration of higher education, on higher education in the United States, England and Paraguay and on education for the professions. Of particular interest are working papers for his study of the merger of the University of Buffalo with the State University of New York, his correspondence and reports on the Paraguay Project and materials collected for his study of higher education in England.

Merger Study, 1966-1969
Working files for G. Lester Anderson's study of the merger of the private University of Buffalo with the State University of New York in 1962. Contains preliminary drafts of the study (1966-1967) and correspondence relating to the project (1967-1969). Also includes background materials, including some original documents (1960-1963) and a copy of Chancellor Clifford C. Furnas' memoir of the negotiations. In 1967, Anderson submitted a draft of his study to a long list of people who had been at the University of Buffalo at the time of the merger. The working files contain the responses of more than fifty faculty and administrators of the University to the merger. Anderson's study was published in Niagara Frontier, the journal of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, in 1972.
