Biographical Note

Lester W. Milbrath received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Minnesota, and his PhD from the University of North Carolina. He joined the Political Science Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1966, after teaching at the University of Tennessee, Duke University and Northwestern University. In December 1969, he was named to head the Social Science Institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration, which was formed to coordinate organized research conducted by UB faculty. In 1976, he was named Director of the Environmental Studies Center and appointed to the University Steering Committee on Regional Environmental Problems in 1978.

Historical Note

The Environmental Studies Center (ESC) was established at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976 from the Environmental Studies Group. The ESC was an interdisciplinary research and teaching center within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration and oversaw the environmental track, offering MS programs in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. The fundamental purpose in establishing the ESC was to carry out "research on problems of environmental perceptions, beliefs and values." The ESC saw environmental issues as social problems. A Department of Environmental Studies was proposed, but not established. The ESC was phased out in 1986.
