On September 20, 1986 the University at Buffalo's School of Pharmacy celebrated its first one hundred years with a gala birthday dinner that capped a week of activities and events. The celebrations included a classical concert in Slee Hall featuring the Buried Treasure Ensemble, an open house in the School of Pharmacy, and the opening of a new pharmacy museum that highlighted pharmaceuticals from the turn-of-the-century.
During the gala dinner, Dean David Triggle spoke about the past, present and future for the school. "The past," he said, "is our accomplishment in professional and scientific measures -- of rigorous programs and pioneering internationally recognized scientific achievements particularly in the fields of pharmaceutics, clinical pharmacokinetics and medicinal chemistry."
"The present," he continued, "is the staging ground for the future. The accomplishments, past and present, that we celebrate tonight are the stuff from which our dreams of the future will be made." -- Mary Beth Spina, UB press release, Sept. 25, 1986
Harold Reiss, a 1956 UB pharmacy graduate, chaired the UB Rx Centennial '86 Committee corresponding with alumni, editing a special newsletter, The Centennial Herald, and organizing the gala dinner. Very active in at UB, Reiss "served as Pharmacy Alumni Association president in 1963-64, 1984-85, and 1985-86. He was chairman of the UB School of Pharmacy's 75th anniversary celebration in 1962 and also chaired its centennial celebration [in 1986]. Among his various editorial involvements, he is past editor of the SUNYAB Pharmacy Newsletter (1970-77), the Erie County Pharmaceutical Association's ECPA Members' Newsletter (1972-75), and The Centennial Herald (1986-87). [He was also] editor of The Buffalo Pharmacy Alumnus and the Buffalo Pharmacist newsletters." -- Buffalo Pharmacist, no. 1, Summer 1987 pg. 3
