Abstract: Collection contains
materials collected by Dr. Fred F. Harcleroad on student unrest in colleges and
universities during the 1960s and early 1970s concerning the attitudes of the
public and students during the unrest period on racial riots, university and
high school governance, students' academic freedom and their role in university
administration, the Vietnam War and political issues during the Nixon
administration. Included are newspaper clippings, magazines (
U.S. News and World Report,
Harpers,
News Week),
magazine articles, pamphlets, newsletters, speeches, "speech materials",
interoffice memos, minutes and papers from conferences, catalogs, and
unpublished essays.

The 1960s and early 1970s saw widespread student activism at colleges
and universities worldwide. Academic freedom and participation in university
governance, racial and political issues, the Vietnam War, the military draft,
and the Nixon administration in the United States were some of the main issues
that led to demonstrations, protests, sit-ins, riots, and ultimately the
killing of students at Kent State University in Ohio on May 4, 1970. Please see
