Abstract: The collection contains material related to Amy Ruth Tobol's academic and extracurricular pursuits at the State University of New York at Buffalo, including extensive involvement in the Anti-Rape Task Force and the Women's Studies Program. Also included are papers which reflect Tobol's positions within the National Lawyers Guild including extensive documentation on her participation in the 12th World Festival of Youth Students (Moscow, 1985).

Biographical Note

Tobol received her undergraduate (1978), law (1983), and doctoral (2000) degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She served as program director for the Law Students Civil Rights Research Council in New York, N.Y. (1983-1986), staff attorney for the Government Benefits Unit at Brooklyn Legal Services Corp. (1987-1988), and associate director of the Career Counseling and Placement Office at the New York University School of Law (1989-1991).


Scope and Content Note

Papers collected during her studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo as an undergraduate (1974-1978), graduate student of Law (1980-1983), and a candidate for Ph.D. (1995) in American Studies as well as during her program directorship of the Law Students Civil Rights Research Council, New York, NY (1983-1986), her position as Staff Attorney, Government Benefits Unit at Brooklyn Legal Services Corp. B (1987-1988) and her associate directorship of the Career Counseling and Placement office at NYU School of Law (1989-1991).

The papers reflect Tobol's academic and extracurricular pursuits at the University at Buffalo including extensive involvement in the UB Anti Rape Task Force, National Lawyers Guild (National and Buffalo chapter) and Women's Studies Program.

The Anti Rape Task Force papers mark the beginnings of the organization from general awareness of rape on campus and the need for such a group to the implementation of UB's ARTF (1975) by Tobol.

The National Lawyers Guild papers reflect Tobol's varied positions within the Guild as National Vice President (1992-1994), Vice President NYC Chapter (1988-1991) and Board Member (1984-1986). Tobol's participation in the Twelfth World Festival of Youth and Students, Moscow (1985) is heavily documented by pamphlets, newspapers and news clippings. National Executive Committee minutes; conventions in NYC, Chicago and St. Louis; AIDS task force; VISA denial project, Haitian refugee project, Summer projects (legal internships) and general Guild news are included in the National Lawyers Guild papers.

Women's Studies College papers include syllabi and course readings (1974, 1978-1979).

In addition, involvement in other facets of the University at Buffalo are represented. Tolstoy College (circa 1978-1982), UB Law Alumni Association (1991), Department of American Studies (1990), Group Legal Services (1977-1978), Sunshine House (1974-1975) and Tobol's student career (1974-1983) are included.

Tobol's involvement in non Buffalo organizations such as Brooklyn Legal Services (1986-1988), American Indian Law Alliance (1986-1991), New York County Lawyer's Association (1990-1991) and Center for Immigrants Rights, Inc. (1985-1988) are represented. Other areas of coverage include a collection of rape issues and general information on the subject of rape ; studies of sex tourism/ prostitution in Philippines, Korea and Thailand; migrant worker issues and military counseling during the Gulf War (1991).
