Biographical Note

Jack Shoemaker has had a long career as a noted publisher, editor, bookseller, and poet. He was founder and director of Unicorn Bookshop in Isla Vista, California, from 1966 to 1968. With David Meltzer he ran the Maya Press, publishing broadsides, books and quartos by poets such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Philip Whalen, Ted Enslin, Robert Duncan, and Cid Corman. Along with Peter Howard, Shoemaker in 1969 founded what is known today as Small Press Distribution. To correspond with his Sand Dollar Bookshop, he started Sand Dollar Books with Victoria Shoemaker in 1970, publishing works by Lew Welch, Ted Enslin, Robert Duncan, Michael Palmer, Leslie Scalapino, and Ronald Johnson. For four years he served as a member of The Literature Panel of The National Endowment for the Arts. From 1965 to 1978 he organized and produced over 125 poetry readings in Santa Barbara, Berkeley, and San Francisco by such figures as Basil Bunting, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Edward Dorn, Gary Snyder, George Oppen, Diane di Prima, Michael McClure, and Ronald Johnson. After several other independent publishing ventures, Shoemaker today co-owns Shoemaker & Hoard, Publishers, in Emeryville, California.
